In Loving Memory

On Mother’s Day, my maternal grandmother, Elector, passed away at the age of 71, surrounded by her loved ones. She was a unique woman, not just in name, but in so many wonderful ways.

The wife of a preacher, she could recite a Bible verse one minute, then turn around and tell a bawdy joke that would leave use all in stitches. She adored Elvis Presley, collected angel figurines, and would watch Jimmy Swaggart on an almost constant loop. At her birthday party a few years ago, she spent a large portion of the evening arm-wrestling with her grandchildren. She didn’t mind when she was given the nickname “Sexy Lexy.”

Though I think she was always beautiful, in her younger years, Mamaw was absolutely gorgeous. I wish the photo on the left had survived in better condition because it’s one of my favorites. I love the gloves and the purse, the kitten heels and the bows on her dress. I think she looks like a movie star, glamorous and chic.

For My Mom

For My Mother

When I was younger, my dad would often tell me that I was just like my mother. I’d scoff and disagree, vehemently opposing the idea that I was anything like her. This was, of course, the exact worst thing to say to a surly, irrational teen. I was sure my mother was out to ruin my life and make me miserable. Why would I want to be like her? Looking back, however, I realize how blessed I was and still am today.

Fabulousness & Fatkinis

Self-confidence has never been something I’ve had in abundance. I’ve always been shy and introverted, preferring to fade into the background. If I could choose a super power, I’d want to be invisible—not to do anything sneaky or forbidden, but just to rid myself of the perceived notion that people are staring at me. Being the center of attention is a nightmare!

For many years, my wardrobe consisted of items in shades of black and gray. I thought that if I wore dark colors, the chance of someone noticing me was lessened. I was incredibly uncomfortable with my size, fearing rude comments from others.

A couple of years ago, I had a burst of self-confidence and decided I needed to be true to myself and stop worrying so much about the thoughts and opinions of others. I’ve always loved prints, but refused to buy them because of the idea that they would make me look even larger or cause someone to give me a second glance.

The Journey to a Healthier Me

Me, April 2015

In January, I decided to change my life. After years of being overweight and unhappy with myself, I knew I needed to take action. I’m still fat, but I feel better and am slowly making progress.

I’ve tried lots of diets in the past—from calorie counting to Weight Watchers—and had moderate levels of success. The problem was that after a certain amount of time, I’d revert back to old habits. After seeing the success of others, I decided to try a low-carb, gluten-free way of life. As a carb-loading, potato-loving, bread-adoring lady, this change was difficult!

The first few weeks felt like torture. I was tired and cranky. My energy hit an all-time low. All I wanted to do was nap and lounge around. My body ached like I had the flu. I wasn’t sure I could handle it, and the urge to give in to my cravings felt overwhelming. There were many times when I thought about eating a doughnut, a yeast roll, or a piece of pie. I wanted to throw in the towel and give up!

Feeling Broody

Saturday was a beautiful day, so I thought I’d spend some extra time outside. The yard looks like a chicken’s idea of paradise, with weeds popping up all over. Because our chickens live in an enclosure and are not free range, I decided to gather some of their favorites.

dandelions

Dandelion greens and flower heads are quickly gobbled up, so I carefully pulled some and tossed them in my bucket. Most people detest dandelions growing in their lawns, but I’m always careful to leave the root. This allows them to continue to grow and spread.

Next up was clover. It grows in abundance in certain parts of the yard, and I was able to add quite a bit to my growing collection of weeds. I looked for plantains, but it must be too early for those. The few I did find were too small to harvest.

The last thing I gathered was the favorite—chickweed. Sometimes I think there is more chickweed in the yard than grass. It grows thick and lush, spreading out like a blanket. It also replenishes itself quickly, so there’s no need to be careful. I yanked up giant handfuls and threw them in my bucket.

When I was finished, I had two large buckets full of weeds for the hens and ducks. I thought they’d be happy to see me!
